What is a UUID v4?
A UUID v4 is a random ID, 36 characters long, that is so unlikely to repeat that you can treat it as unique.
UUID stands for Universally Unique Identifier. Version 4 is the random kind: 122 of its 128 bits come from a secure random number generator. Anyone, on any computer, can make one without checking with anyone else, and it still will not clash.
That is why UUID v4 is the most common way to give an ID to a database row, a file, an order or an API request.
What a UUID v4 looks like
Here is the ID you just made, split into its parts. ClickTap Generate above and watch it change.
- The 4 means version 4. It is always in this spot.
- This digit is always 8, 9, a or b. It marks the standard layout.
- Everything else is random: 122 bits in total.
When to use UUID v4
Good for
- IDs for users, orders and records
- File names that must not clash
- Request and tracking IDs in logs
- Test data and sample records
Can two UUID v4s ever be the same?
In theory, yes. In practice, no. There are so many possible values that a repeat is far less likely than a hardware fault.
Make a UUID v4 in code
const id = crypto.randomUUID();
console.log(id);Built into modern browsers and Node.js.
import uuid
id = uuid.uuid4()
print(id)The uuid module ships with Python.
import java.util.UUID;
UUID id = UUID.randomUUID();
System.out.println(id);Built into Java, no library needed.
Guid id = Guid.NewGuid();
Console.WriteLine(id);In .NET a Guid is a UUID, and NewGuid() makes a v4.
import "github.com/google/uuid"
id := uuid.NewString()
fmt.Println(id)Uses the widely used google/uuid package.
SELECT gen_random_uuid();Built in since PostgreSQL 13.
UUID v4 vs other versions
Questions people ask
Is a UUID v4 the same as a GUID?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for a UUID, and .NET's Guid.NewGuid() makes a v4. Windows often shows it in uppercase with braces.
Can I use a UUID v4 as a password or secret token?
It is hard to guess, but UUIDs are meant to be IDs, not secrets. For reset links or API keys, use a token generator built for that job.
Uppercase or lowercase?
Both mean the same ID. The standard says to write lowercase and to accept either when reading.
Do UUID v4s sort by creation time?
No. They are fully random. If you need IDs in creation order, use UUID v7.
